The purpose of developing the Fort Worth Hazard Mitigation Action Plan has two major objectives; first, to identify the natural hazards that could impact the City of Keller as well as the Tarrant County region, and second, to allow opportunities for grant funds for existing or future mitigation projects specified in the Plan.

Hazard mitigation is the action taken to reduce or eliminate long-term risk to people and property from hazards like flooding, lightning and tornados, among others. The U.S. Government passed the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act in 1988 (amended by the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000) which requires jurisdictions to adopt FEMA-approved mitigation action plans in order for local governments to participate in certain federal grant programs for disaster planning and relief.

The Community Development Department is responsible for the development and maintenance of Annex P, Hazard Mitigation in accordance with the City of Keller’s Emergency Management Plan. Since 2004, the City of Keller has been in partnership with the Fort Worth–Tarrant County Office of Emergency Management (Web Link), the City of Fort Worth, 19 surrounding jurisdictions, and unincorporated territories of Tarrant County, assisting with the development of a Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Action Plan (HMAP) in accordance with minimum State and FEMA HMAP criterias.

Only portions of the Fort Worth Hazard Mitigation Action Plan (PDF) pertaining to the City of Keller are available for download from this 703-page document. The complete Plan is available for viewing at the Community Development Department in Keller Town Hall.

This Fort Worth Hazard Mitigation Action Plan will be incorporated into Annex P of the City of Keller Emergency Management Plan to meet planning standards of the Texas Division of Emergency Management.  Contact Chuck Blankenship, Assistant Chief for Operations, at (817)743-4450 or by sending e-mail to cblankenship@cityofkeller.com, for any questions regarding the City of Keller's Emergency Management Plan.
