TxDOT kicks off FM 1709/Keller Parkway repaving on May 12

Post Date:05/08/2019

Work on a $2.47 million TxDOT project to repave FM 1709/Keller Parkway is set to begin Sunday, May 12. The 3.86-mile project will include milling, base failure repairs, repaving and new markings from Stonebridge Lane in Southlake to Hwy. 377/Main Street. It will also include an adjustment to the southwest corner of the FM 1709/Pearson Lane intersection in Southlake aimed at making right turns easier, and improvements at the Rufe Snow and Keller-Smithfield intersections.

At both the Rufe Snow and Keller-Smithfield intersections on FM 1709/Keller Parkway, lane configurations will be changing to improve efficiency for northbound and southbound traffic. The northbound lanes will be restriped to provide dual left turn lanes at both. Southbound drivers on Rufe Snow will see the same, and southbound drivers on Keller-Smithfield will encounter three lanes: dedicated left, straight and right.

Drivers will also see adjustments to some of the medians at those intersections as their noses are pulled back so that that turning vehicles aren’t pushed as far into the intersections as they are now. And new signage will eliminate the ability of Keller Parkway drivers at those intersections to U-turn, keeping traffic moving and minimizing the chance for collisions between U-turning traffic and drivers turning right on red.

Public Works anticipates that the changes will have positive impacts for all four directions of traffic at the Rufe Snow and Keller-Smithfield intersections, even before the full signal retiming of FM 1709 through Keller and Southlake gets started (hopefully before the end of the year).

To get all of this accomplished, construction crews will be working overnight with lane closures from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays with a goal to complete the project in September of this year.
