KPD Chief Fortune to present policy changes to City Council

Post Date:01/24/2021

Thank you to the many residents who participated in the Keller Police Department's community Town Hall meetings over the past two weeks. If you missed those discussions, you can catch up through the recordings linked below.

Police Chief Brad Fortune will be sharing information with City Council on policy changes and initiatives stemming from these discussions and the department's internal evaluations of the Aug. 15 incident as part of his annual report presentation. We will promote the date of that presentation once it has been added to an upcoming agenda.

The city is also pleased to share that we have reached a mediated settlement agreement in the civil suit brought by the Puente family against two Keller Police officers. Though the final documents have yet to be signed by the parties and/or filed with the court, the Texas Municipal League anticipates that settlement will be finalized within the next few weeks.

Of note, we have had several residents inquire how settlements like these are handled — specifically what impact they have on the city’s finances. Like many Texas communities, we carry a broad insurance policy that includes liability. Keller will be responsible for a $5,000 deductible in this settlement, with the remainder paid by TML’s Intergovernmental Risk Pool.

Thank you again to those of you who have been part of this conversation over the past several weeks. Stay tuned for more when the chief makes his next presentation to City Council.
