The Keller City Council will call a special election for a fourth seat next week, following the decision by Councilman Tag Green to file in this spring’s mayoral race.
The Place 4 councilman filed his paperwork for the council’s top spot late Monday — and was required by the City Charter to step down from his current seat immediately due to the length of time between now and the scheduled end of his term in 2028.
While the Place 4 seat will be called as a special election, its candidates will still appear on the May 2 ballot alongside the candidates for Mayor, Place 5 and Place 6. That means Keller residents will elect leaders for four of our seven council seats this year.
Candidate filing for Place 4 will run separately from the existing filing period underway for the other three races, beginning Wednesday, Feb. 18 and ending at 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 3. The winner in that race will finish the unexpired term, needing to run for re-election in 2028 to remain on council.
Councilman Green is the second sitting member of City Council to file, hoping to replace outgoing Mayor Armin Mizani; Mayor Pro Tem and Place 6 Councilman Ross McMullin announced his plans to run for mayor in November. Because Councilman McMullin’s current term expires in May, the City Charter does not require him to forfeit his seat.
As a reminder, candidate filing for Mayor, Place 5 and Place 6 ends at 5 p.m. this Friday, Feb. 13. Learn more about this year’s City Council election at
