Public Health Dept. announces first West Nile Virus positive of season
A mosquito sample collected from the trap at 7000 Shady Grove Road has tested positive for West Nile Virus, marking the first positive test of the season.
As a reminder, Tarrant County Public Health updated its mosquito-spraying guidance last year in response to concerns that local mosquito populations may be developing resistance to commonly used insecticides.
Under the revised guidelines, cities have been asked to spray within a half-mile of a trap only when mosquitoes at that location test positive for West Nile Virus for three consecutive weeks or when a human case is reported nearby.
If you haven’t already been taking steps to protect yourself and your family from mosquitoes, now's the time:
- Drain standing water on your property and throughout your neighborhood
- Stay indoors during dusk and dawn
- Dress in long sleeves and pants when possible, and consider spraying your clothing with insect repellent.
