Construction has started on improvements along Johnson Road from approximately Hallelujah Trail to Rhonda Road. After numerous public input opportunities in recent years, the final project scope for Johnson Road includes roadway, drainage, and water system improvements, the installation of a roundabout at the intersection of Keller-Smithfield Road and Johnson Road, and a meandering sidewalk on the south side of the roadway.

Current Status
Construction has started. The first traffic impacts for this project are expected to begin around Jan. 17, 2023, as water line work begins on the west end of the project. Construction is anticipated to be complete by mid-summer 2024.

Relocation activities by cable/internet providers in the area have concluded.
- Dec. 14, 2022 - Public Works hosted a public information meeting to discuss project phasing and construction for the Johnson Road project.
May 2022
Atmos Energy reported that its assets have been relocated out of the project area.
December 2021
Tri-County Electric Cooperation reported that its assets have been relocated out of the project area.
April 4, 2021
After additional discussion, City Council directed staff to move forward with the Johnson Road project as designed.
March 16, 2021
Public Works shared an update on discussions with Tri-County Electrical Cooperative. Council discussed moving and/or removing sidewalks, the pros and cons of different types of utility poles, and the cost/time associated with revisions to the design for pole locations.

Public Works provided an update to City Council, addressing questions that were raised during the Feb. 24 work session. These included the cost and timing of various options for breaking up or minimizing the project as a way to minimize the impact of third-party utility relocations.

City Council received an update on the Johnson Road project as part of their work session. Discussion focused primarily on the location of utility poles that would be relocated as part of the project, and options to explore with Tri-County to minimize the impact for adjacent residents.
Nov. 19, 2020
Public Works and the engineering contractors focused on the project hosted a final pre-construction meeting with adjacent property owners. The come-and-go event held from 4-7 p.m. offered the opportunity to review 90% plans and discuss specific property questions in detail. Comments from that meeting contributed to the final set of designs, taking the project to 100%.

City Council received a final pre-bid update on the Johnson Road reconstruction project based upon 90% construction plans.
June/July 2020
Copies of 60% plan sheets relevant to individual properties were mailed to property owners so that they could review exactly what is proposed to be removed and/or constructed. Recipients were asked to reach out to city staff with any questions or concerns so that comments could be shared with the design team in advance of proceeding to 90% completion.
Feb. 4, 2020
City Council received an update on the Johnson Road reconstruction project, including anticipated tree impacts, and provided direction on project elements so that designs could be advanced to the 60% mark.
